Switchboard Testing & Compliance

We carry out comprehensive electrical testing and documentation to ensure your switchboards meet current AS/NZS 61439 and AS/NZS 3000 requirements — providing full traceability for audits, insurance, and asset management.

  • Arc Flash Hazard Assessment — Incident energy calculations and labelling to protect your maintenance personnel and meet WorkSafe NZ obligations.
  • Protection & Discrimination Verification — Confirming upstream and downstream breaker coordination is correct and faults will be isolated at the right point.
  • Fault Level Verification — Ensuring your switchgear remains correctly rated for current network fault levels — particularly important after network upgrades.
  • Test Reporting & Documentation — Detailed test certificates, maintenance records, and photographic evidence supplied after every visit for your asset register.

Preventative Maintenance & Inspection

Regular switchboard maintenance is essential for AS/NZS 3000 compliance, WorkSafe NZ obligations, and the ongoing safety of your staff and facility. Our structured maintenance programmes are tailored to your site's operational demands and equipment criticality.

  • Visual & Thermal Inspection — Where thermographic inspection is required, we work alongside certified thermography specialists to identify hot spots, loose connections, and failing components before they cause unplanned outages.
  • Insulation Resistance Testing — Megger testing to identify degraded insulation across switchboard circuits and connected equipment.
  • Circuit Breaker Testing & Calibration — Trip time verification, contact resistance measurement, and recalibration to manufacturer specifications.
  • Busbar & Connection Torque Checks — Physical inspection and re-torquing of all busbar connections, terminations, and cable lugs to prevent resistance heating.
  • Cleaning & Contamination Control — Removal of dust, moisture, and contaminants from enclosures — critical in dusty industrial and coastal environments.

Switchboard Upgrades & Remedial Work

Where maintenance reveals defects or compliance gaps, our team can carry out remedial work on the spot or schedule a return visit — including component replacement, re-wiring, labelling upgrades, and full switchboard refurbishment.

  • ACB Retrofitting — We retrofit all types of air circuit breakers including Merlin Gerin, Terasaki, ABB, and Schneider — extending the life of your existing switchboard infrastructure without full replacement.
  • Component Replacement — Supply and installation of circuit breakers, contactors, fuses, busbars, and metering equipment across all major brands including Schneider, NHP, and Allen Bradley.
  • Labelling & Identification — AS/NZS 3000 compliant circuit labelling, danger notices, and arc flash warning labels — including in-house laser engraving for a professional finish.
  • Enclosure Upgrades — IP and IK rating upgrades, door sealing, and enclosure replacement where existing switchboards no longer meet environmental requirements.
  • Capacity Upgrades — Addition of spare ways, sub-distribution boards, or full MSB upgrades to accommodate load growth or facility expansion.
  • Full Switchboard Refurbishment — Where replacement isn't viable, we refurbish existing switchboards to current standards — extending asset life and deferring capital expenditure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should industrial switchboards be inspected in New Zealand?

AS/NZS 3000 and WorkSafe NZ guidelines recommend annual inspections as a minimum for most industrial and commercial switchboards. High-criticality environments such as dairy, food processing, wastewater, and continuous process typically require inspections every 6 months. We tailor maintenance frequency to your site’s operational demands and equipment criticality.

What does a switchboard maintenance inspection include?

A full inspection covers visual and thermal examination using infrared thermography, insulation resistance (megger) testing, circuit breaker trip time verification and calibration, busbar and connection torque checks, and cleaning of enclosures to remove dust, moisture, and contaminants. We provide full test certification and documentation for audit and insurance purposes.

Do you maintain switchboards you did not originally manufacture?

Yes. We maintain and inspect switchboards regardless of original manufacturer. Our team is experienced across all major LV switchboard platforms including Schneider, ABB, Simotrol, Logstrup, and Quantum assemblies.

What is thermographic inspection and why does it matter?

Thermographic (infrared) inspection uses calibrated thermal imaging cameras to detect hot spots, loose connections, and failing components that are invisible to the naked eye. Catching these early prevents unplanned outages, equipment damage, and potential fire risk, typically at a fraction of the cost of reactive repairs.

Is switchboard maintenance a legal requirement in New Zealand?

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, operators have a duty to ensure plant and equipment is safe and without risk to health. While there is no single regulation specifying exact maintenance intervals, WorkSafe NZ and AS/NZS 3000 provide clear guidance. Failure to maintain switchboards can result in enforcement action, insurance complications, and liability exposure following an incident.

Do you provide ongoing maintenance programmes or one-off inspections?

Both. We offer structured preventative maintenance programmes tailored to your site’s criticality and budget, as well as one-off compliance inspections, post-fault assessments, and pre-sale condition reports. Nationwide service is available.
