Industrial switchboard maintenance / New Zealand

Industrial switchboard
maintenance.

CWS supports industrial, infrastructure and commercial sites with LV switchboard inspection, condition assessment, planned maintenance and remedial work. Our Invercargill team works on MSBs, MCCs and distribution boards, including assemblies we did not originally manufacture.

Maintenance based on condition and criticality

Assess the board. Plan the work.

Switchboard maintenance should start with the installed equipment, operating environment, duty, condition and available records. An older board with obsolete protection, contamination or evidence of overheating needs a different plan from a documented modern assembly in a clean electrical room.

CWS can review the board condition and identify items requiring further testing, repair, component replacement or engineering review. Where specialist thermography or calibrated breaker trip testing is required, that work can be coordinated with specialist providers.

Maintenance does not recreate missing design verification.

Inspection can establish condition and identify defects, but it does not automatically prove undocumented busbar ratings, fault withstand, temperature-rise performance or other original assembly characteristics. Where an upgrade changes the duty of an existing board, those limitations need to be considered separately.

Typical maintenance scope

What we inspect.

Visual condition

Inspect enclosures, barriers, devices, conductors, terminations and signs of contamination, corrosion, overheating or mechanical damage.

Connections and cleanliness

Planned isolation can allow cleaning and connection checks to be completed in accordance with the agreed maintenance scope and equipment requirements.

Protection equipment

Review breaker and protective-device condition, settings and available records. Specialist testing can be arranged where required.

Thermal inspection

Thermography can help identify abnormal heating while equipment is operating under suitable load conditions. CWS coordinates this with specialist thermography providers where required.

MCC equipment

Inspect starter compartments, contactors, overload equipment, control wiring, VSD interfaces and removable modules relevant to the installed MCC.

Documentation

Record observations, identified defects and agreed follow-up work so the site has a usable maintenance history rather than an isolated service visit.

When maintenance finds a bigger problem

Repair, retrofit, upgrade or replace?

Not every ageing switchboard needs immediate replacement, and not every existing board is a good candidate for further modification. The decision depends on condition, available documentation, spare parts, required load, fault level, physical space and the extent of the proposed changes.

CWS has completed ACB retrofit work on existing industrial MSBs, including replacement of obsolete air circuit breakers with modern equipment during planned shutdowns. View the dairy ACB retrofit case study.

Planning a larger change?

Our existing switchboard upgrade or replacement guide explains the information needed to assess an ageing board. For a full replacement MSB, see our main switchboard capability.

  • Existing single-line diagram and board drawings, if available
  • Board photographs, labels and device details
  • Known fault level and supply information
  • Load changes or new equipment being proposed
  • Shutdown constraints and site-access requirements
  • Known defects or previous maintenance reports

Southland base · nationwide project support

Switchboard maintenance from an actual switchboard manufacturer.

CWS has manufactured LV switchboards in Invercargill since 1971. That manufacturing background is useful when maintenance progresses beyond inspection into component replacement, busbar or enclosure work, ACB retrofit, new distribution sections or complete replacement planning.

For Southland sites, discuss local inspection and remedial requirements with our Invercargill team. For planned industrial shutdowns elsewhere in New Zealand, send the site location, board details and required programme so the service scope can be reviewed.
