Frequently Asked Questions

What is a low voltage switchboard?

A low voltage (LV) switchboard is an assembly of electrical components that distributes, controls, and protects electrical power at voltages up to 1000V AC. It acts as the central hub for incoming power distribution across a building or facility, housing circuit breakers, busbars, metering, and protection devices. In New Zealand, all LV switchboards must comply with AS/NZS 61439.

What is the difference between a main switchboard and a distribution board?

A main switchboard (MSB) is the primary point of power entry for a building or facility, receiving supply directly from the network and distributing it to downstream distribution boards and equipment. A distribution board is a secondary assembly that receives power from the MSB and distributes it to final circuits such as lighting, power outlets, and equipment. MSBs are typically larger, higher-rated assemblies designed for industrial and commercial applications.

What standard do switchboards need to meet in New Zealand?

All low voltage switchboards in New Zealand must comply with AS/NZS 61439, the mandatory standard for low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. This standard covers design verification, construction, testing, and documentation requirements. Every switchboard Clive Wilson manufactures is designed, built, and tested to AS/NZS 61439.

How much does a custom switchboard cost in New Zealand?

Custom switchboard pricing varies significantly depending on current rating, fault level, number of circuits, protection requirements, platform, and finish. A small commercial distribution board may cost a few thousand dollars, while a large industrial main switchboard or MCC can range from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Contact us with your specification for an accurate quotation.

How long does it take to manufacture a custom switchboard in New Zealand?

Lead times depend on complexity, size, component availability, and current workshop loading. Simple distribution boards may be completed in a few weeks, while complex industrial MSBs and MCCs typically require 8 to 16 weeks from confirmed order. We manufacture entirely in-house in Invercargill, giving us direct control over scheduling and quality at every stage.

Who manufactures custom switchboards in New Zealand?

Clive Wilson Switchboards Ltd has manufactured custom LV switchboards, motor control centres, and automation systems in Invercargill since 1971. ISO 9001 certified, Schneider Prisma accredited, and Avetta registered, we build for heavy industry, infrastructure, dairy, data centres, and commercial projects nationwide. All assemblies are designed, built, and tested in-house.

What information do you need to quote a switchboard?

To prepare an accurate quotation we typically need incoming supply details (voltage, phases, maximum demand), fault level at the point of supply, number and type of outgoing circuits, environmental requirements (IP rating, operating temperature, ingress protection), any specific platform or brand preferences, compliance documentation requirements, and your project programme. The more detail you can provide, the more accurate the quotation.
