This guide covers what custom switchboard manufacturing means at CWS, the platforms we build on, the sectors we supply, the certifications we work to, and how to start a project with us. Founded by Clive and Beverly Wilson in 1971, manufacturing in Invercargill, delivering nationwide.

Why custom switchboards matter

Off-the-shelf switchboards work for the most basic commercial installations. Anywhere the load, the environment, the protection coordination or the operational pattern is anything other than standard, the off-the-shelf path becomes a compromise.

A custom build starts from the loading schedule and the single-line diagram and works back to the right platform, busbar capacity, fault rating, form of internal separation, enclosure layout and component selection. The board is designed for the site, not adapted to fit it.

The cost difference between custom and catalogue is smaller than most people expect. The performance and maintainability difference, over the 20 to 40 year service life of the assembly, is significant.

What we build

Our build envelope covers the full range of NZ industrial and commercial LV switchgear:

  • Main switchboards (MSBs) up to 8,000A on the Logstrup platform; smaller MSBs on Simotrol or Schneider Prisma Plus G
  • Motor control centres (MCCs) on the Simotrol platform as standard, Logstrup for withdrawable module specifications
  • Mechanical services switchboards (MSSBs) for HVAC, pump rooms and building services
  • Distribution boards (DBs) on Schneider Prisma Plus G for consistency with the upstream MSB
  • EV charging kiosk switchboards for commercial and public charging infrastructure across NZ
  • PLC, SCADA and industrial automation control panels with Schneider, ABB and Allen-Bradley integration
Builder’s note: All design, manufacture, testing and engraving happens under one roof in Invercargill. No third-party handoffs for sheet metal, powder coating or labelling. This is the single biggest driver of our lead-time and quality control.

Compliance and certifications

  • AS/NZS 61439 type-test backed across all platforms
  • ISO 9001 quality management certified since 1995
  • Schneider Prisma Plus G accredited builder
  • Avetta registered and SiteWise Gold accredited for major NZ infrastructure procurement
  • Master Electricians of New Zealand member
  • EEHA-qualified team for hazardous area work

Who we build for

Our switchboards are installed across:

  • Dairy and food processing: Fonterra, Alliance, Open Country and other major NZ processors
  • Water and wastewater treatment: council and commercial plants nationwide
  • Freezing works and meat processing
  • Public EV charging infrastructure: including Tesla Supercharger sites and other commercial fast-charging networks
  • Hospitals and healthcare
  • Sawmills, timber processing and aggregate plants
  • Ports and shore-side facilities

A custom switchboard is engineered for the load it will carry, the environment it will sit in, and the people who will maintain it. That is the difference between a board that runs for 30 years and a board that needs replacing in 10.

Technical capabilities at a glance

  • Busbar ratings: up to 8,000A on the Logstrup MSB platform

  • Form of internal separation: Form 1 through Form 4b, with Form 4a as the CWS Simotrol standard
  • IP rating: IP41 through IP66 (see our IP rating guide)
  • In-house design: EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Pro Panel for schematics and 3D layout
  • In-house manufacture: sheet metal, powder coating and engraving on site in Invercargill
